Gold Guide

Everything you need to know about gold purity, hallmarking, and choosing the right gold for you.

Understanding Gold Purity

Pure gold (24K) is too soft to be used in jewellery by itself. To make it durable and wearable, other metals like copper, silver, or zinc are added. The ratio of pure gold to these alloys determines the karat of the jewellery.

22K916

91.6% Pure Gold

The most popular choice in India. Ideal for traditional jewellery, bridal sets, bangles, and chains. Slightly soft but has a rich, warm colour.

18K750

75% Pure Gold

Best for diamond and gemstone jewellery. Stronger than 22K, making it perfect for intricate and everyday designs.

14K585

58.5% Pure Gold

Most durable of the three. Ideal for daily wear rings, bracelets, and earrings. Popular among younger buyers.

What is BIS Hallmarking?

BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) hallmarking is the official certification that guarantees the purity of gold jewellery in India. Since 2023, hallmarking is mandatory for all gold jewellery sold in India.

A BIS hallmark gives you complete assurance that the gold you are buying is exactly what the jeweller claims it to be — no more, no less.

How to Read a Hallmark

Every BIS hallmarked piece carries three key markings:

1

BIS Logo

A small triangle with a tick mark and the letters 'BIS' — the official certification stamp of the Bureau of Indian Standards.

2

Purity Grade

Shown as 22K916, 18K750, or 14K585. This tells you exactly how much pure gold is in your jewellery.

3

HUID Number

A unique 6-digit alphanumeric code (e.g. AZ4F9P) assigned to each piece at the hallmarking centre. You can verify it using the BIS CARE app.

How to Verify Your Gold

You can verify the authenticity of any hallmarked jewellery using the BIS CARE app, available on Android and iOS.

  1. Download the BIS CARE app on your phone
  2. Select "Verify HUID"
  3. Enter the 6-digit alphanumeric HUID code stamped on your jewellery
  4. The app will show you all details — purity, jeweller, hallmarking centre, and date
